With my first week on the Monkey all but in the books, it has been a great week of retrospection for me. I am a child of a father or was THAT close to becoming a rock star. It didn’t work out because of lack of management and a personnel change at a crucial “make or break” time that cost my Dad’s group a tour that could have perhaps launched them into the Rock N Roll stratosphere. But it didn’t happen. However, because my Dad listened to all of this type of music all my growing up life.
My Dad’s group was called Reed Harper & The Notes. Reed was a minor star in New York City, and because his name was part of the groups name, it carried some weight in the music industry at the time, and my Dad as a Tenor in the group ended up being a recording artist in 1958 with Victor Records…yes, the same record company Elvis Presley was on!! (Go down 11 songs from Elvis on the catalog pic and there’s my Dad’s band!!)
The 45 record shown on the left was their first big hit, Shaky Little Baby (a song I now own the rights to!) which SHOULD have been in every jukebox across the country in 1958-1959! You can hear it by copying and pasting this link: https://youtu.be/NoQxiMLySrU. Their biggest hit was called “Sweetheart Of The Prom” which came out at Prom time in April of 1959 and got airplay all up and down the East Coast. You can listen to it by copying and pasting this link: https://youtu.be/whMadV4Y97Y, I built a Facebook page for the band a few years back for my Dad’s 75th birthday. You can find it here: www.facebook.com/RHTN1958/ I also gathered all 9 records they made, and put together a 18 song Greatest Hits CD of the band, and that is also discussed on the Facebook page.
I grew up in New York going to New York Mets baseball games with my Dad, and we would listen to lots of 70’s disco, funk, soul, and rock that created memories that still last to this day, as I am sure they do in someway for you as well.
So it’s special to me, in honor of my Dad Paul, to play all the biggest hits of the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s for you! looking forward to having lots of fun evenings together, 6:00pm-10:00pm MST Monday-Friday.
