Well it is getting dangerously close. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and if you said “hey lets eat at my house this year” that means your are in charge of the turkey. So the question is, how big of turkey should i get, how long will it take to thaw? And how long should i wait before cutting into that bad boy and serving it up? Well you are in luck! I did the research and now here is your “Turkey 101”
First: How big of a turkey should i get?? Well the rule of thumb is to plan for at least one pound per person. That of course means if you have 12 people showing up, get at least a 12 pound turkey. I know, i thought that seemed like a lot too, but keep in mind those that take it upon themselves to bring their own take home tupperware…And they know who they are…
Second: How long do i need to allow for my turkey to thaw? Well according to my research you need 24 hours for every five pounds of turkey. So if you get a 20 pound turkey, it will take four days to thaw in the refrigerator. And NO do not thaw it on the counter!!
Third: After that bad boy has roasted and looks amazing, how long should i wait before carving? If you get right into your bird right when it comes out of the oven, the juices will run everywhere and you will end up with a dry bird. And then of course you become known as the person who cooks “arid fowl” After you take the turkey out of the oven, you really should wait at least 15 minutes. Cover with foil to keep warm and you will be good to go!
So there it is! Happy Thanksgiving and may your bird come out moist and delicious because i am bringing my tupperware!
